A New Mexico school district is investigating a claim made by a parent that a district school bus was speeding when it passed her on a local highway. School district officials said all buses in the district have GPS tracking devices installed, and with the use of GPS tracking software it is possible to pinpoint the speed and location of any bus at any time. While the district did not disclose what details were revealed via GPS tracking, they cited that the speeding bus incident will be handled internally as a personnel matter. GPS tracking software also has been used in the past to protect drivers from false accusations.
As part of a school assignment to develop a new business , a group of Costa Mesa students have developed a GPS tracker to aid those with Alzheimer’s and other disabilities. Inspired by another student with a disability, the students will be presenting their company, Gotect, and their device in a contest judged by Wall Street bankers with hopes of finding investors. As they prepare for their trip to New York City, the students are still raising the $20,000 required to attend.
GPS tracking devices, particularly ankle bracelet GPS trackers are often considered as additional security options in caring for individuals at risk for wandering or exploitation.

In addition to providing helpful information for business operations, GPS tracking systems are also used for personal safety. Here, we’ve outlined some of the best safety features today’s GPS trackers have to offer.
The Panic Button
Perhaps the most important feature of a GPS tracker for personal safety is the panic button. With the press of a single button, a GPS user in an emergency situation can immediately alert others if his or her tracker is equipped with a panic button. On most GPS tracking systems, this feature activates a rapid-fire sequence of location alerts followed by automated cell phone alerts via GPS tracking software.
The ability to communicate with another human being in the event of an emergency can mean the difference between life and death. If you’re selecting a GPS tracking system for personal safety, TrackingTheWorld recommends a tracking device with two-way voice capabilities.
Extreme Weather Durability
For personal safety, a GPS tracker with all-weather durability is important, particularly if you are an outdoor enthusiast. In situations such as mountain biking or snow skiing, your safety may depend on the ability of your GPS tracker to reliably function in less than desirable temperatures. Be sure to ask your GPS dealer for specifics on bad weather and water resistance capabilities before purchasing a tracker.
Long Battery Life
Another of the most important safety features for GPS trackers is the ability of the tracker to operate for as long a period as possible without a charge. Depending on locate update intervals (how often you want the tracker to report your location), today’s GPS trackers can go as long as a month or more between charges. With this capability, or something similar, you can rest assured your GPS tracking system will function even if you forget to charge it once in a while.

Portage Township Schools on the southeast side of Lake Michigan recently installed GPS trackers on all 110 buses in the school’s fleet. Added as a measure of convenience for both parents and administration, the program was given a “test drive” during summer school to prepare for the beginning of the 2014 school year.
Using GPS tracking software on computers or smart phones, parents and faculty are able to see the exact location of any bus at any time–even on field trip days– While the new GPS tracking system will most assuredly offer parents peace of mind that their child made it to school safely, officials also hope it will be an added convenience for parents of children whose buses are running late. With tracking software, parents will have detailed information on when the bus can be expected, hopefully eliminating the need to call the school officials.
School administration also hopes to use the system to conserve fuel and maintain efficiency by rerouting buses when traffic incidents occur.

Some clever covert GPS tracking and a little public shaming is helping to reduce the big problem of bicycle theft in San Francisco. Plain clothed police officers are planting GPS equipped bicycles around the city, tracking bike thieves, and charging them. A little public shame is part of the deal, with mugshots posted on Twitter under the hashtag #ThankYou4TakingOurBaitBike. An estimated 4,000 bicycles have been stolen in San Francisco since 2012–triple the number of cell phones reported stolen for the same time period.
The US federal government has recently released funding to aid in purchasing GPS trackers for autistic children at high risk for wandering away and becoming lost. The average cost of GPS tracker for a child ranges from $80-$100 before the addition of data costs/subscriptions for monthly GPS tracking software service.
The release of federal GPS tracking funding comes on the heels of incidents where children have become lost by leaving their homes or their schools. While some children are eventually found unharmed, other incidents have resulted in the deaths of children. Autistic children can be easily sidetracked with curiosity or panic quickly in a new situation. GPS tracking systems do not replace parental supervision but are a valuable extra layer of security when needed.

Similar to just about every other electronic device, GPS tracking devices are becoming smaller and smaller with each advancement in technology. With the decreased sizes of GPS trackers, consumers are able to track smaller devices such as electronics like cameras and laptops.
Recently, an Arizona man realized the value of tracking smaller items of value after his home was burglarized. During the burglary, approximately $10-thousand dollars in jewelry along with a camera and other electronics were stolen. Due to the micro GPS tracking devices installed on the stolen camera, and satellite imagery provided by GPS tracking software, the victim was able to view the location of the suspect’s car and even identify in which area of the suspect’s home his belongings were being stored.
Although authorities were able to recover most of the victim’s belonging based on the GPS tracking information, some of his wife’s jewelry was not recovered. Authorities suspect it could have been pawned shortly after the crime. A suspect is in custody.

In the aftermath of the tragic deaths of 19 Arizona firefighters, the Florida Forest Service is outfitting its firefighters on the frontlines with GPS tracking systems. Using GPS tracking software, supervisors will know the location of each firefighter at any time, and be able to reach them more quickly in the event of an emergency.
The new GPS tracking program is being implemented in hopes of increasing the safety of those closest to potentially deadly blazes, including those using bulldozers to push back fire lines. According to the forest service, the program is possibly the first of its kind for firefighters. The GPS tracking program does not require cell phone or Internet service, but rather relies on “packets” of electronic information sent to supervisors’ laptops provided they are within a two mile range of the GPS tracking device.
