GPS Tracking News

Australian officials have turned to GPS tracking units to track and monitor the whereabouts of a flying fox in hopes of learning more about the transmission of the Hendra virus and reducing its spread to other species of bats and horses.

The GPS tracker unit will track the feeding, sleeping and flying time of the flying fox.  Flying foxes are one of more than 60-species of bats in Australia , and include 4 of the world’s largest bats.  Queensland has reported  11 horse deaths due to the Hendra virus this year.

We’re usually delivering news about GPS tracking sytems being used to apprehend thieves.  This one offers an entirely new perspective:

You probably wouldn’t expect to find GPS tracking units for sale in a grocery store, but that’s exactly what police found a suspect trying to sell in an Arizona supermarket.  Police noticed the 18-year old suspect make a suspicious trade in front of the store, and followed  him inside to find that he was attempting to sell the GPS trackers, valued at $2,000,  for $15 ea.

In addition to GPS tracking equipment, police found a credit card reported stolen by a woman earlier the same day.

Some scientists think that the long-held secret of crop circles may have something to do with GPS tracker devices.  The greater detail of today’s crop circles compared to the crop circles off the 1970s indicate that high-tech equipment would be necessary to complete them.

In addition to GPS tracking, some crop circles now contain visible “construction lines” used as a grid for creating the amazingly complex patterns crop circles are known for.  Microwave energy is thought by some to be the method of causing the corn stalks to lie down flat.   Crop circles are often associated with the UK, but they have appeared in many other countries.

Of all the GPS tracking news we’ve reported, this could perhaps be the most unusual.

According to the New York Post a sting involving a GPS tracking unit has resulted in the exposure of a Diamond District mailman thief possibly responsible for multiple stolen packages containing jewelry over the last several months.  The mailman was taken into custody and later released on bail.

The sting worked by placing a GPS tracker in a package designed to send an alert when opened.   When the suspected mail carrier opened the package, which he thought contained diamonds, authorities were notified of his exact location.

GPS tracking of packages is not only for police stings.  Businesses often use GPS tracking to track their deliveries and provide their customers with detailed delivery information.  This results in improved customer relations.

We’ve often written about the benefits of GPS tracking devices for the security of costly heavy equipment.  According to a recent GPS tracking news story, an Australian man has experienced these benefits first hand when his $65K excavator was stolen from his own back yard.   Having installed a GPS tracking unit on the equipment just weeks earlier, the excavator was quickly recovered with the assistance of local police.

Immediately after realizing the excavator was stolen the man briefly panicked, and then rememberred the GPS tracking device he recently had installed.  Using his GPS tracking software, he was able to direct authorities to withing 15 feet of the excavator.

Relieved that his excavator was recovered the man commented on the facts that he enjoyed the thrill of  the GPS tracking recovery, and that his GPS tracker had already proven to be worth its cost many times over.

Unsafe drinking water is a leading cause of disease and death,  and is considerable world health issue.   A new GPS tracking device known as the Water Canary, tests any water sample to evaluate its safety and then pinpoint the user’s location via GPS tracking.  The result is a solution for allowing individuals to determe if their water source is safe and crowd sourcing to alert officials to “bad water” areas via GPS tracking technology.

While currently hand-constructed at around $100 each, the goal is to mass produce the canary yellow water sampler GPS tracking units and provide them to at-risk areas/individuals at no charge.

A New Jersey judge recently ruled that the use of GPS trackers in an effort to track a spouse suspected of infidelity is legal.  The specific case involved a woman who used a GPS tracking system placed in the glove box of her husband’s car to track his whereabouts upon the recommendation of a private investigator.  After 2-weeks of covert GPS tracking, the man’s car was tracked to another woman’s driveway, where he was leaving  with another woman in his car.

The judge in the appellate court case cited that the use of  GPS trackers in a family-owned vehicle does not constitute an invasion of privacy, and that the suspected spouse did not drive to a location where he had a reasonable expectation of privacy.

According to the Detroit Free Press, GPS tracking technology for tracking airplanes, could soon be available if government funding and the approval of the FAA  come through.

With a concept easily comparable to fleet tracking, GPS tracking systems for aircraft would allow pilots to fly directly to their destinations rather than using the current practice of indirect routes which are dependent upon the ability to communicate with ground stations.

GPS tracking systems will also allow pilots to see their own locations as well as the locations of other planes in the area.  Precision GPS technology will allow planes to fly closer together.  In addition, it is anticipated that GPS tracking installed on aircrafts will result in fuel conservation due to the fact that pilots will have the technology necessary to glide directly on to the runway while idling, rather than using the current procedure of stair step descents which consume considerable amounts of fuel.

GPS tracking for aircraft may be delayed due to lack of funding and the FAA approval process.  Some fear that a prolonged delay would negatively affect the United States’ lead role in high tech aviation development around the world.
