GPS Tracking News

Here’s an excellent example of using GPS tracking devices to ensure the safety of the ones you love the most.  According to a recent New Jersey report, an 84-year-old woman who wandered away from home was located unharmed within 2-hours of her disappearance thanks to a GPS tracking bracelet worn on her person.   Located in a wooded area about 2-miles from home, the woman is a participant in a New Jersey program which provides free GPS trackers to at risk individuals unable to leave home alone due to medical conditions that may cause them to wander away.

Have you considered GPS trackers for the elderly loved ones in your life?  Compact and discreet ankle bracelet GPS trackers are an affordable and reliable option for Alzheimer’s patients, dementia patients, and others.

Research at Ohio State University is providing more information on tracking underground nuclear tests from thousands of miles away through GPS tracking technology, as detailed in a presentation at the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization meeting in Vienna.

Researchers hope the added use of GPS tracking technology, in addition seismic activity and chemical sensors already in use, will provide concrete evidence on underground nuclear tests, by pinpointing precisely when and where tests occur.

When a powerful underground  nuclear test occurs, it creates changes in the Earth’s upper atmosphere, known as the ionisphere.  The ionispheric changes are detectable by GPS tracking satellites, alerting scientists to the possibility of an underground nuclear test.   The use of GPS tracking in this manner is still in development, with one of the biggest challenges being the ability to recognize the difference between an earthquake and an underground nuclear test.

According to the LaCrosse Tribune, a newly introduced Wisconsin bill is asking for GPS tracking devices for repeat offenders of protection orders issued through Wisconsin courts.  The GPS tracking bill stems from “Cindy’s Law”, an Illinois law requiring GPS tracking of repeat violators of protective orders, which was named in tribute to a woman killed by her boyfriend three  years ago.

Since Illinois enacted the GPS tracking legislation, other states have followed suit, including Minnesota and Indiana.  If the bill passes in Wisconsin, the GPS tracking services would be funded by the offenders themselves through a $200 surcharge for every violator of a protective order.

GPS tracking

Nineteen people in Detroit are suspects in a nationwide theft ring, partly attributed to the use of  covert GPS tracking devices.  According to police, the suspects targeted specific jewelry shops and watch stores, often asking to view high-end jewelry and watches before running out the door and jumping into a getaway car without paying for the merchandise.

The theft ring appears to have been somewhat sophisticated in that the stolen merchandise was often tossed into a second car shortly after the theft to prevent it from being found  in the vehicle seen leaving the scene.  With covert GPS tracking devices, officers were able to confirm the location of multiple cars in each operation,  thereby linking the suspects to the stolen items. The case involves 19 Detroit individuals in robberies spanning 22 states over a five year timeframe.

GPS tracking for city buses

The use of GPS tracking for city bus systems is certainly on the rise.  City bus users in St. Albert in Alberta, Canada  now have the ability to monitor their city buses in real time via any electronic device with access to the Internet. The vehicle tracking technology allows users to view the location of their bus on a map through GPS tracking devices installed on every bus in the fleet.

The new GPS tracking system is designed to prevent long wait times, making the public transit system more friendly, and ultimately increase the number of patrons choosing to use public transportation.  Considering the popularity of smart phones, it estimated that nearly half of bus patrons will take advantage of the new real-time GPS tracking system.

The cost of adding customer-accessed real-time GPS tracking capabilities to the buses’ existing GPS tracking devices was approximately $100,000.  St. Albert is the sixth municipality in Canada to offer customers real time GPS tracking for a public transportation system.
