One of the many ways GPS tracking devices are used for fleet tracking is city bus tracking. Over the last decade, communities have found that the utilization of GPS tracking systems not only improves efficiency in public transportation operations, but also encourages citizens to take advantage of the transportation resources available to them. Here are the top four reasons why GPS tracking improves public bus systems:
Location and Schedule Monitoring
Transportation dispatchers using GPS for fleet tracking are easily able to monitor the location of each bus in real time through the use of GPS tracking software. If a particular route or driver is causing delays within the transportation system, the problem is easily isolated and fixed in a manner that saves time, financial resources, and maintains satisfaction for the public.
Increased Ridership
Simply stated, every public transportation system wants more commuters. Some community bus systems have found that GPS tracking systems which allow patrons to monitor the location and estimated arrival time of their bus via a smartphone application actually increase the overall ridership within the system. For example, if rushed commuters can verify their bus is running on time, or know it is running late, they are much more likely to align their schedules with bus arrival times, resulting in more riders overall.
Fuel Dollars Saved
With fuel costs rising, bus system administrators are becoming increasingly aware of this threat to their bottom lines. As an industry dramatically affected by fuel costs, public bus systems possibly have the most to gain from the use of GPS tracking systems allowing them to identify and remap the most inefficient routes within the system.
Pleased Riders
GPS tracking provides an effective tool for maintaining a city-wide bus system that is hassle free and reliable for patrons, resulting in satisfied, returning public transportation customers.

Here’s a great GPS tracking news story for Friday… A Michigan Rite Aid Clerk managed to slip a GPS tracking device into the pillow case a robber was using as a loot bag. As she filled the pillow case with $5,000 in cash from the store’s safe at the robber’s demand, the clerk dropped the device into the bag. Shortly after leaving the store, the GPS unit was activated, leading authorities to the suspect and his alleged getaway driver. Both were arrested, and cash totaling $4900 was recovered.

A Kentucky van owner was recently able to direct authorities to the exact location of his stolen van and the ultimate recovery of thousands of dollars in stolen goods. On Tuesday, April 2 Carrol County, Kentucky authorities were alerted that the van was missing. With a GPS tracking device installed on the vehicle, the owner was able to utilize GPS tracking software to point authorities to its exact location–a nearby gas station.
The van was found to contain approximately $35,000 in stolen property, mostly items from a medical transportation company. In addition to recovering the van and the stolen goods, two suspects were arrested. Through the use of GPS tracking, not only did the owner recover his vehicle intact, the stolen goods will likely be returned to their owner. In the past we’ve written about GPS tracking for elderly individuals, especially those with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Not only do GPS trackers offer peace of mind for family members, but most importantly they offer a greater level of security for the loved one. With GPS tracking software, it’s possible to know the exact location of the person wearing the GPS tracker at any time–day or night.
Today, we’d like to remind our readers that GPS trackers and GPS tracking software also provide added safety for children- especially those with disabilities. While some parents choose GPS trackers that can be tossed in a backpack or worn on the waist, another option, particularly for at risk children, is a GPS tracker enclosed in an ankle case. Discreetly hidden under the pants leg, an ankle bracelet GPS tracker is more likely to remain with the child at all times rather than a tracker stashed in a backpack. In the event of an emergency, parents could track the exact location of their child using GPS tracking software, or even set up automated cell phone alerts when the tracker crosses a specific boundary.
