GPS tracking software school bus

A New Mexico school district is investigating a claim made by a parent that a district school bus was speeding when it passed her on a local highway.  School district officials said all buses in the district have GPS tracking devices installed, and with the use of GPS tracking software it is possible to pinpoint the speed and location of any bus at any time.   While the district did not disclose what details were revealed via GPS tracking, they cited that the speeding bus incident will be handled internally as a personnel matter.  GPS tracking software also has been used in the past to protect drivers from false accusations.

GPS tracking software school bus

Portage Township Schools on the southeast side of Lake Michigan  recently installed GPS trackers on all 110 buses in the school’s fleet.  Added as a measure of convenience for both parents and administration, the program was given a “test drive” during summer school to prepare for the beginning of the 2014 school year.

Using GPS tracking software on computers or smart phones, parents and faculty are able to see the exact location of any bus at any time–even on field trip days–  While the new GPS tracking system will most assuredly offer parents peace of mind that their child made it to school safely, officials also hope it will be an added convenience for parents of children whose buses are running late.  With tracking software, parents will have detailed information on when the bus can be expected, hopefully eliminating the need to call the school officials.

School administration also hopes to use the system to conserve fuel and maintain efficiency by rerouting buses when traffic incidents occur.

With a market projected to surpass the $26M dollar mark by 2016, tracking devices and GPS tracking software are more in demand than ever.   If you’re considering GPS equipment for your business, or if you’re interested in becoming a reseller, here are just a few of the types of businesses and organizations that are using GPS tracking software every day:

Heavy Construction:  As scrap metal prices rise, construction companies are protecting expensive building materials, salvage materials, appliances, and heavy equipment with GPS tracking software.  In many cases, covert tracking devices have led to the swift recovery of stolen construction materials and equipment.

Your Neighborhood School:  Public and private schools are now relying on tracking software for everything from tracking school buses to tracking the locations of teachers within school buildings for improved safety in the event of an emergency.  Tracking devices on school vehicles also help in conserving fuel and assuring that school vehicles are not abused by staff.

Delivery/ Service Providers:  From your local pizza joint to home repair crews, service providers are tracking the location of their fleet vehicles using GPS tracking software.  Not only do tracking devices provide for added driver security, they allow businesses to respond more efficiently to incoming calls for service.

GPS tracking software

Whether you’re interested in starting your own GPS tracking business, or purchasing tracking services for your business, here is a brief explanation of some of the most common features of GPS tracking software.

GeoFencing:  Essentially a virtual boundary, a geofence allows GPS tracking software users to set an approved area of travel for a GPS tracking device.  When the tracker leaves the predetermined area, a series of alerts are set into motion, which may include cell phone calls and/or emails.

Smart Phone Integration:  As with many other aspects of our daily lives, using GPS tracking software doesn’t require sitting in front of a computer continuously monitoring the locations of tracking devices.   Most software programs are now accessible via cell phone applications, and as mentioned above software alerts may be sent to your mobile phone.

Mapping Options:   GPS tracking software mapping options are continuously improving.  Today’s mapping options include satellite views, street level views, traditional mapping views, customized mapping options,  and even hybrid views.  Based on the specific needs of your business or your customer, it’s easy to find a mapping option that works for you.

As one of the fastest growing markets today, offering GPS tracking software services to your own customers can provide you with great potential for future success.   If you’re ready to get started with your own GPS tracking business, here are a few tips from TrackingTheWorld:

Choose your Target Market:

While business owners offering GPS tracking software services may choose to offer their services toa very broad audience, others prefer to target a niche market with a need for specific types of GPS tracking services.  For example, some target law enforcement, where the need is largely for covert tracking operations, yet others have selected to target their tracking services to businesses requiring fleet tracking for multiple vehicles or specifically to individuals for personal protection.

GPS Hardware Choices:

As you begin your GPS tracking software business, you may want to decide which  GPS tracking devices you want to suggest for your customers.   This choice will largely depend on your target market, and the specific needs of that group.  For example, if you’re offering GPS tracking for law enforcement and other covert tracking applications, you’ll likely want to offer GPS trackers with features that include motion detection, weather resistance, and extended life battery options.  TrackingTheWorld can help you select which devices would be most suitable for different uses.

Set a Pricing Plan:

As a TrackingTheWorld GPS tracking software provider, you are authorized to set prices based on your own preferences, including offering services that renew by the month, quarter, or year.  While customers with fewer resources may prefer a monthly service plan, larger customers will likely want to take advantage of a discount plan that rewards them for paying a year in advance.  Working out your pricing details in advance will help you with a smooth business launch.

GPS trackign recycling bins

You’ve probably seen them in your own community…large metal bins for dropping off clothing donations.  As it turns out, not even  donations given in good will are exempt from those who rummage through  clothing bins in hopes of reselling or keeping the goods.  One Baltimore company, that originally thought donations were down,  has successfully retrieved stolen goods, and led authorities to recycled clothing thieves with the help of GPS tracking software— and in the process found out that donations weren’t down after all.   By placing GPS tracking devices in various clothing items–in pockets, liners, etc., and using GPS tracking software, the company has successfully  retrieved several batches of stolen clothing.  Company officials use geofencing, a feature of the tracking software to receive cell phone alerts whenever one of their GPS tracking devices leaves the immediate area of the clothing collection bins.   The clothing collected by the company is bailed and then shipped to third world countries.

GPS tracking fire truck

After the deployment of 260 GPS tracking devices in garbage trucks, police cars, and other city owned vehicles over the last few years, the city of Grand Rapids recently suspended and warned various city workers.  The reported offenses mostly consist of taking longer than authorized breaks and driving company vehicles for personal use.  However, a few years back, a police officer was forced to resign after GPS data revealed that he or she was taking unauthorized breaks outside of his or her designated patrol area.

The city has recently begun installing GPS trackers on fire trucks with the goal of reducing the response times of some calls.  Based on data provided by GPS tracking software, dispatchers can easily select the truck in the best position to respond

The tracking devices used by the city of Grand Rapids are not covert tracking devices; all employees are made aware of their presence on city owned vehicles.

GPS tracking software for asthma

Among what has to be one of the most interesting uses we’ve seen for using GPS tracking software is this:  Doctors are now using GPS tracking technology to teach patients how to get control of their asthma, and consequently, dramatically reducing their medical costs. Using inhalers outfitted with GPS tracking technology, the tracking devices monitor the location of the patient each time the inhaler is used.  By tracking when and where the patient requires the inhaler, doctors can help their patients find patterns related to their exposure to different environments with the goal of reducing overall asthma attacks and inhaler use.
