GPS Tracking for College Students:

For most of us, the school year is coming to a close and summer is on the way. High school graduates are headed to college, and away from home, perhaps for the first time in their lives.   During this memorable time, one of the most common concerns for parents is the personal safety of their young adult on campus.

In recent years,  GPS tracking technology has become a very common added safety measure for the personal safety of campus students.  GPS trackers have become more portable, incredibly reliable, and more affordable for families to use on a daily basis.  Here is our best advice on choosing a GPS tracking device for your college student.

Choosing a GPS Tracker

Portability: When it comes to GPS tracking and college students, portability is an important factor.   Students on the go want a GPS tracking devices that is small enough to fit in the pocket of their jeans, in a purse,  or backpack.  When using GPS tracking for your college student’s personal protection,  assure that it is comfortable to wear and easy to use.

Durability: Busy college students need durable GPS trackers built to withstand the abuse of being carried around campus everyday and ocassionally tossed on a dorm room floor. Look for a tracker with a sturdy housing, and perhaps one that is water resistant to help you get the most return on your GPS tracking investment.

Reliability: A GPS tracker for personal protection purposes must be reliable.  When selecting a tracker, ask the dealer about its ability to reliably work in low signal areas such as parking garages, theatres, and large campus buildings, it’s battery life, and how accurately the GPS tracker can pinpoint a location.  In addition, shop for a GPS tracking unit that includes a panic button, which allows the user to send  an SOS message which will automatically update you via cell phone in the event of an emergency.

Software: GPS tracking requires the use of GPS tracking software via the Internet.  Your service provider will supply you with the login information necessary to monitor the location of your student’s GPS tracking device.

GPS or Global Positioning Satellite (System) got its start in the United States with the military. Today, the GPS market is one of the hottest markets in consumer electronics. Most people understand the benefits of GPS tracking and are curious about the technology, but the fact is that very few people really understand how it works. GPS is commonly used in vehicles to help drivers arrive at their destinations, but this technology is also used in a wide variety of other ways as well.

The U.S. military devised GPS as an effective way to track military personnel and as a way to pass directions on to soldiers. Satellites were launched to support the system and it is these satellites that we use today.

Each satellite continuously transmits its location via a radio frequency that can penetrate clouds and to an extent, buildings. The receiver on the ground takes the signal and triangulates its position here on earth. GPS takes the guesswork out of navigation and it works in nearly every geographic region on earth. An exception could be when someone is in a cave or a deep canyon, so the system is not foolproof.

It is thought that GPS could replace radar for air traffic control purposes. This would make air travel much safer and could save governments millions of dollars every year. The development of such a system is still decades away, according to the FAA, but the potential is definitely there.

From time to time customers ask why their tracker does not give destinations when they have it set to report every hour etc…

The reason being is that they are using it in conjunction with the hibernating battery pack. The battery pack automatically turns off the tracker after 5 minutes of being still. Your update interval has to be less than the time it takes to go to sleep.

TrackingTheWorld is always adding new features to it’s GPS tracking software. Now I will go over the changes with the new geo fencing system

Now you are able to draw a box and not just use what is on your screen at the time. After you click “Geo Fence” to activate your geofence console double click on the furthermost point that you want your fence to be. Now double click on the opposite furthermost point and you have just drawn

Next you may have noticed the new box next to your geo fence console.

Geofence Box
Enter – Only when the GPS tracker enters a defined area
Exit – Only when the GPS tracker leaves a defined area
Both – Both when the GPS tracker enters and exits a defined area
1-Shot – Just a simple 1 time geofence that will disappear after the GPS tracker has been violated the fence.

Now enter the email or phone number you want alerted. You can have multiple people alerted by adding “;” between each recipient and you can also have it send an SMS text message if you use the following syntax. +1phonenumber.

Do not include any spaces or dashes
ex. (+15552221212)

After this use your password (same password for polling) and hit set. To verify that the fence has been saved look at the bottom of the screen and it should say “Fence Saved”.

To delete a fence click the geo fence button, click on the delete text next to the fence. Now enter your password and click on “set”. Those fences have now been deleted.
