A Kentucky van owner was recently able to direct authorities to the exact location of his stolen van and the ultimate recovery of thousands of dollars in stolen goods.   On Tuesday, April 2 Carrol County, Kentucky authorities were alerted that the van was missing.  With a GPS tracking device installed on the vehicle, the owner was able to utilize GPS tracking software to point authorities to its exact location–a nearby gas station.

The van was found to contain approximately $35,000 in stolen property, mostly items from a medical transportation company.  In addition to recovering the van and the stolen goods, two suspects were arrested.  Through the use of GPS tracking, not only did the owner recover his vehicle intact, the stolen goods will likely be returned to their owner.  Source:  http://www.fox19.com/story/21872629/police-owner-uses-gps-tracking-to-find-stolen-van

In the past we’ve written about GPS tracking for elderly individuals, especially those with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.  Not only do GPS trackers offer peace of mind for family members, but most importantly they offer a greater level of security for the loved one.  With GPS tracking software, it’s possible to know the exact location of the person wearing the GPS tracker at any time–day or night.

Today, we’d like to remind our readers that GPS trackers and GPS tracking software also provide added safety for children- especially those with disabilities.  While some parents choose GPS trackers that can be tossed in a backpack or worn on the waist, another option, particularly for at risk children, is a GPS tracker enclosed in an ankle case.  Discreetly hidden under the pants leg, an ankle bracelet GPS tracker is more likely to remain with the child at all times rather than a tracker stashed in a backpack.  In the event of an emergency, parents could track the exact location of their child using GPS tracking software, or even set up automated cell phone alerts when the tracker crosses a specific boundary.

Here’s an interesting bit we found this morning:  The Center for Conservation Biology, CCB,  has been using “on board” GPS tracking devices to track the movements of bald eagles since 2007.  What began as a large Department of Defense study and other smaller projects has culminated in 70 eagles fitted with GPS trackers.  The devices have reported daily for the last six years to amass the world’s largest “dataset” for eagles–nearly one million locations!  You can even follow the eagles via online GPS tracking software: http://www.wildlifetracking.org/index.shtml?project_id=349&dyn=1357316048

Move over Batmobile… the Austin, TX police chief just announced the deployment of a GPS tracking device to rival any super hero gadget. The department will be trying a GPS tracking dart ejector for squad cars.  Controlled from a console inside the police vehicle, the device is mounted to the front of the law enforcement vehicle and shoots a sticky dart equipped with GPS tracking technology at the fleeing vehicle.   The device is designed to improve officer and community safety by allowing them to track a suspect’s vehicle without the need to follow it.  Officers have the ability to aim the device as desired from the control console.  The StarChase device is the first to be used in Texas, and was purchased with grant funding.  Each device costs around $4900.

This week, the Wisconsin Supreme Court upheld the use of a covert GPS tracker installed by police in the vehicle of a man suspected of burglaries in 2007. Using the GPS tracker installed on the vehicle police were able to place and apprehend the suspect at the scene of a burglary where additional evidence was found.

The tracking device was installed after a warrant was obtained, however the suspect’s defense included that the use of the GPS tracker exceeded the scope of the warrant due to its real time tracking capabilities.   In a majority ruling the court found that the use of the GPS tracker by police was covered by the warrant.

With the number of retiring baby boomers on the rise, the number of individuals suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s disease is also climbing.  As the numbers are expected to continue increasing, some health care agencies are looking into GPS tracking applications as a useful tool in allowing dementia patient’s more freedom and families additional peace of mind.

One Scandinavian study is testing the use of a GPS tracking app with dementia patients to gauge the impact on GPS tracking on the lives of dementia patients.  So far the study has included approximately 50 patients for up to a year each.  According to the study, those patients who used the GPS tracking app felt safer, had more freedom, and an overall better quality of life.
