It is a double-edged sword to send your teenager off to college. On the one hand, it’s a ritual that signifies the passage from childhood into adulthood. It’s also a time of increased independence and growth. On the other hand, the current generation of children has grown up in unprecedented times – times that only seem to be getting more uncertain with each passing day. 2020 has been an unpredictable year. As your student arrives at campus for the first time or returns from summer break, there’s no better time to invest in a GPS tracking device. Here are some of the best reasons to consider a GPS tracking device.
GPS Tracking Device Reason #1: Vehicular Safety
The first reason that you might want to invest in a GPS tracking device for your college student this fall involves their commute. When your teenage driver was living under your roof, you might have had a ton of up-close and personal visibility about their driving habits. However, you have less access to that information if they live on campus. When you invest in a GPS unit for their car, you can know that their car is safe at all times.
Similarly, you can track their location in the event that something bad happens. A fender-bender or a serious car accident can be a harrowing experience for all involved. Being able to see the location of the vehicle can assist police and medical personnel in locating any injured drivers or passengers.
GPS Tracking Device Reason #2: Personal Safety
The second reason to consider investing in a GPS tracking device for your college student comes down to their personal safety at all times. Sadly, violence on college campuses is on the rise. Our GPS devices provide an SOS button. Your child can press this if they are in danger. It will alert local law enforcement to your student’s location and send help quickly. While being a victim of violence is not on anyone’s daily schedule, it’s important to be prepared.
Additionally, GPS tracking can be used to keep track of your student if they are away on a planned camping trip or other excursion where phone reception might fail. Keeping a silent, watchful eye can add a sense of serenity for all involved.
GPS Tracking Device Reason #3: Lost or Stolen Item Tracking
The third reason to consider investing in GPS tracking devices has to do with maintaining personal property. Theft and other non-violent crimes are prevalent on college campuses. Investing in geotags or another device management system will allow you and your student to locate lost or stolen items. For example, their backpack might be unzipped as they dash across campus to get to class. If that happens, their wallet can fall out. In many cases, it’s gone for good. However, if a GPS device was attached, it will be easier to locate the item or to have the item returned in the same condition it was in when lost.
GPS Tracking Device Reason #4: Health in the Time of COVID-19
The fourth reason to consider purchasing a GPS tracking system is particularly applicable in Fall 2020: COVID-19. Since earlier this year, the world has been grappling with the Novel Coronavirus (or COVID-19). Best practices for keeping safe from the virus have involved social distancing, wearing a face mask, and regular hand-washing. In many places, this has assisted with reducing the spread of the virus. Unfortunately, college campuses are very crowded. Between crowded lecture halls, common cafeteria spaces, and the close quarters of dormitory living, there is still an increased risk of the virus infecting your student or someone close to them.
In these times, a GPS tracking system can be used for contact tracing and other wellness monitoring functions. Additionally, some GPS-enabled watches can track symptoms and habits in the background. This data can be particularly helpful to healthcare professionals and college leadership as they continue battling COVID-19.
GPS Tracking Device Reason #5: It’s Not Just For the Kid
The fifth reason to consider investing in a GPS tracking system this fall is a bit more significant. It will allow your college student to keep in touch with you. You might think that you’re investing in a system for the student away from home, investing in a fuller GPS suite can provide peace of mind. It can also add an extra level of safety for the entire family.
You can use all these great features for everyone still living at home and beyond. If you have an older parent, providing them with an emergency device to summon you or medical assistance in a moment of need will add great value. You can also track family pets through GPS. We can secure the entire family for a great price, no matter how many people, places, and pieces of property are involved.

Sending your child off to college can be scary. It is the first time that they are away from home without you. Fortunately, there are ways to easily keep track of your child even when they are hundreds of miles away from home. With GPS trackers, you can rest assured that your college student is safe and exactly where they should be. These are the two types of GPS trackers that college students need.
Personal GPS Trackers
A personal GPS tracker is extremely beneficial for college students to have. This is especially significant for students who do a lot of traveling. Whether your child enjoys hiking, taking weekend trips to the beach, or taking a day trip to the nearest city, you can locate them with a personal GPS tracker. You can check on your child’s location and feel peaceful knowing that they are ok. The personal GPS tracker has many helpful features that will keep your child safe, such as an SOS button and person-down alerts. A personal GPS tracker is also good for students who have jobs where they may be the lone worker. For example, if your child works at the local coffee shop and closes alone at night, you can keep tabs on them to make sure they safely make it home.
Vehicle GPS Trackers
Another GPS tracker that should be sent to school with your child is a vehicle tracker. This allows both the child and their parents to track the car. This can be very helpful if there is a situation where the car is stolen. It can also help parents monitor their child and car as the students drive to and from campus. A vehicle GPS tracking device can detect aggressive driving behaviors, such as harsh braking and acceleration. You child will be a much safer driver on their way to and from school if they know you have the ability to track their driving behavior. Another benefit of the vehicle tracking device is always being able to find your car. On large college campuses, the parking lots can be so vast that sometimes kids will “lose” their car. With the GPS tracker, kids will always know the location of their car.
GPS trackers are a good way for parents to know that their kids are safe in college. Kids often travel hundreds of miles to school, and it can be very scary for parents to not know if their kids are safe. With a personal GPS tracker and a vehicle tracker, parents can easily determine the location of their children and know that they are safe. A New Mexico school district is investigating a claim made by a parent that a district school bus was speeding when it passed her on a local highway. School district officials said all buses in the district have GPS tracking devices installed, and with the use of GPS tracking software it is possible to pinpoint the speed and location of any bus at any time. While the district did not disclose what details were revealed via GPS tracking, they cited that the speeding bus incident will be handled internally as a personnel matter. GPS tracking software also has been used in the past to protect drivers from false accusations.

As part of a school assignment to develop a new business , a group of Costa Mesa students have developed a GPS tracker to aid those with Alzheimer’s and other disabilities. Inspired by another student with a disability, the students will be presenting their company, Gotect, and their device in a contest judged by Wall Street bankers with hopes of finding investors. As they prepare for their trip to New York City, the students are still raising the $20,000 required to attend.

In addition to providing helpful information for business operations, GPS tracking systems are also used for personal safety. Here, we’ve outlined some of the best safety features today’s GPS trackers have to offer.
The Panic Button
Perhaps the most important feature of a GPS tracker for personal safety is the panic button. With the press of a single button, a GPS user in an emergency situation can immediately alert others if his or her tracker is equipped with a panic button. On most GPS tracking systems, this feature activates a rapid-fire sequence of location alerts followed by automated cell phone alerts via GPS tracking software.
Voice Capabilities
The ability to communicate with another human being in the event of an emergency can mean the difference between life and death. If you’re selecting a GPS tracking system for personal safety, TrackingTheWorld recommends a tracking device with two-way voice capabilities.
Extreme Weather Durability
For personal safety, a GPS tracker with all-weather durability is important, particularly if you are an outdoor enthusiast. In situations such as mountain biking or snow skiing, your safety may depend on the ability of your GPS tracker to reliably function in less than desirable temperatures. Be sure to ask your GPS dealer for specifics on bad weather and water resistance capabilities before purchasing a tracker.
Long Battery Life
Another of the most important safety features for GPS trackers is the ability of the tracker to operate for as long a period as possible without a charge. Depending on locate update intervals (how often you want the tracker to report your location), today’s GPS trackers can go as long as a month or more between charges. With this capability, or something similar, you can rest assured your GPS tracking system will function even if you forget to charge it once in a while.

Portage Township Schools on the southeast side of Lake Michigan recently installed GPS trackers on all 110 buses in the school’s fleet. Added as a measure of convenience for both parents and administration, the program was given a “test drive” during summer school to prepare for the beginning of the 2014 school year.
Using GPS tracking software on computers or smart phones, parents and faculty are able to see the exact location of any bus at any time–even on field trip days– While the new GPS tracking system will most assuredly offer parents peace of mind that their child made it to school safely, officials also hope it will be an added convenience for parents of children whose buses are running late. With tracking software, parents will have detailed information on when the bus can be expected, hopefully eliminating the need to call the school officials.
School administration also hopes to use the system to conserve fuel and maintain efficiency by rerouting buses when traffic incidents occur.

Entrusted with both the safety and education of our children, public school administrators seeking to more effectively manage student transportation are increasingly turning to GPS tracking devices and tracking software to help them efficiently manage bus routes, monitor drivers, and ensure child safety.
Bus Route Planning
In both rural and urban areas, planning for pick-up and drop-off of hundreds, or even thousands of school children requires organization and efficiency. Bus routes must be planned to maximize fuel efficiency, minimize mileage, and be timed perfectly to get students to school on time.
GPS tracking software is beneficial in planning student transportation because of its ability to quickly assist administrators in determining the most efficient route of travel for every bus in a school’s fleet.
Safety First with GPS Devices
The most important responsibility of any public school system is to ensure the safety of its students, and GPS tracking systems have become an additional layer of security for students and drivers on bus routes. With tracking devices installed on each school bus, and the use of GPS tracking software, school administrators are easily alerted if a bus leaves its intended route of travel, if a bus is stopped for any length of time, and direction of travel.
Staff Monitoring
While no one wants to think of the possibility of irresponsible school staff members responsible for the safety of school children, it is an unfortunate reality. For these situations, GPS tracking systems provide a cost effective way to monitor school bus drivers for speed, location, and possible misuse of a school fleet vehicles.
GPS tracking software can protect your drivers in the event they are falsely accused of disregarding speed limits or other committing other violations. With GPS tracking devices, routes of travel are precisely recorded and are may be played back in real time.

Among what has to be one of the most interesting uses we’ve seen for using GPS tracking software is this: Doctors are now using GPS tracking technology to teach patients how to get control of their asthma, and consequently, dramatically reducing their medical costs. Using inhalers outfitted with GPS tracking technology, the tracking devices monitor the location of the patient each time the inhaler is used. By tracking when and where the patient requires the inhaler, doctors can help their patients find patterns related to their exposure to different environments with the goal of reducing overall asthma attacks and inhaler use.

The US federal government has recently released funding to aid in purchasing GPS trackers for autistic children at high risk for wandering away and becoming lost. The average cost of GPS tracker for a child ranges from $80-$100 before the addition of data costs/subscriptions for monthly GPS tracking software service.
The release of federal GPS tracking funding comes on the heels of incidents where children have become lost by leaving their homes or their schools. While some children are eventually found unharmed, other incidents have resulted in the deaths of children. Autistic children can be easily sidetracked with curiosity or panic quickly in a new situation. GPS tracking systems do not replace parental supervision but are a valuable extra layer of security when needed.

South Bend, Indiana schools have taken a major step forward in making their school bus system more user-friendly. With the addition of GPS tracking devices and a mobile phone app called “My Stop”, parents can now track their child’s bus from the time it leaves the lot in the morning, when it is nearing their child’s stop, and even when it has safely delivered their children to school.
School officials report that the new GPS tracking program has reduced the number of phone calls regarding bus arrival times. Parents appreciate the program as it allows them to send their child to the bus stop just before the bus arrives, reducing the amount of time the child has to spend in the cold and reducing the amount of time the child is vulnerable to other risks.
