GPS Tracking Software

If you’ve ever wondered whether GPS tracking is a cost effective addition to your business, consider this post in addition to our other posts involving a GPS tracker and the recovery of stolen items.

Authorities in Portland, Oregon recently reported the recovery of a stolen cell phone, wallet and text book from an 18-year old woman and her mother on their way to the airport to fly home to California.  Equipped with a GPS tracking service, the phone’s owner was able to track the phone’s location to the suspect’s exact location—and we do mean exact.

Using GPS tracking software, authorities caused the phone to ring while it was still in the suspect’s front pocket! After hearing the ringing of the GPS tracker equipped phone, authorities recovered the phone and detained the suspect. Imagine that conversation…. Hello? This is the officer standing in front of you.  Click.

A New Jersey judge recently ruled that the use of GPS trackers in an effort to track a spouse suspected of infidelity is legal.  The specific case involved a woman who used a GPS tracking system placed in the glove box of her husband’s car to track his whereabouts upon the recommendation of a private investigator.  After 2-weeks of covert GPS tracking, the man’s car was tracked to another woman’s driveway, where he was leaving  with another woman in his car.

The judge in the appellate court case cited that the use of  GPS trackers in a family-owned vehicle does not constitute an invasion of privacy, and that the suspected spouse did not drive to a location where he had a reasonable expectation of privacy.

According to the Detroit Free Press, GPS tracking technology for tracking airplanes, could soon be available if government funding and the approval of the FAA  come through.

With a concept easily comparable to fleet tracking, GPS tracking systems for aircraft would allow pilots to fly directly to their destinations rather than using the current practice of indirect routes which are dependent upon the ability to communicate with ground stations.

GPS tracking systems will also allow pilots to see their own locations as well as the locations of other planes in the area.  Precision GPS technology will allow planes to fly closer together.  In addition, it is anticipated that GPS tracking installed on aircrafts will result in fuel conservation due to the fact that pilots will have the technology necessary to glide directly on to the runway while idling, rather than using the current procedure of stair step descents which consume considerable amounts of fuel.

GPS tracking for aircraft may be delayed due to lack of funding and the FAA approval process.  Some fear that a prolonged delay would negatively affect the United States’ lead role in high tech aviation development around the world.

An traditional form of transportation in India is getting a very modern upgrade with GPS tracking devices soon to be installed on autorickshaws, commonly used by commuters in Indian cities.   According to Indian Express, a test group of 250 autorickshaws will be equipped with GPS tracking systems by the end of July.   The GPS trackers will be monitored via GPS tracking software by transport department officials.

The GPS trackers are intended to prevent drivers from overcharging passengers, and taking longer routes than necessary.  The GPS trackers also include a panic button intended for use by passengers in emergency situations so that authorities may reach them more quickly.

GPS tracking Excavator

Here’s a great GPS news story from Australia:

A man monitoring his excavator via GPS tracking software recently watched in real-time as a thief towed away the costly piece of machinery which he had equipped with a GPS tracking device .  During a trek of more than 30-miles, the GPS tracking software indicated the speed and location of the excavator as it was hauled by the tow truck.  After monitoring the entire episode via real time GPS tracking on his computer, the owner of the excavator called local authorities and told them exactly where to intercept the suspect as he continued to tow the excavator.  The suspect was taken into custody and the excavator was recovered without damage.

The above story is a great example of GPS tracking solutions at work for business owners.  Without the GPS tracking system installed on the excavator, and the sophistication of GPS tracking software, its possible the excavator might not have been recovered, resulting in considerable loss.
