Maryland wildlife conservation officials are considering the use of fleet tracking via GPS tracking technology to track fishing boats with the goal of reducing maritime poaching (fishing for species not in season). “Better compliance” is how one official described the goal of a possible voluntary GPS tracking program.
The possible addition of a GPS tracker program is partially the result of officials uncovering illegal poaching of 13-tons of striped bass which caused disaster for the legal striped bass season.

Two-million dollars in grant funding will be put to work improving technology for Columbia, Missouri’s city bus transportation system, including the possible addition of a GPS tracking system to the city’s bus fleet, and the addition of natural gas powered buses.
The GPS tracking systems would allow smart phone users to view the location and arrival information of each bus.
Other technologically-advanced considerations include auto-counting of passengers and length of individual bus rides with the goal of creating a more efficient public transportation system for the city.

According to the BBC, a Scotland man is using GPS tracking technology to track his herd of cattle, after the request was made by a local agency managing wildlife preservation. The GPS tracking project’s goal is to make the cattle’s grazing area more suitable for birds and other wildlife, in an attempt to increase their populations.

We’ve often blogged about the use of GPS trackers for municipalities, including GPS tracking for school districts and police departments. Here’s another story from Bergen County, NJ that provides an excellent example of how cities and towns are using GPS tracking systems to cut costs and increase efficiency.
In August, the county implemented the use of 100 GPS tracking systems in county vehicles and is considering the installation of 100 more. A New York Department of Labor employee is suing his previous employer for
planting a GPS tracking device on his personal vehicle. The man, who
was fired in August of 2010 for suspected time-sheet violations, is suing
the New York Department of Labor for implanting a GPS device in his car in
2008 while he was at work. The data from this device was a major factor in his
termination.
The man and the ACLU have filed a petition against the state. Currently the
matter awaits a ruling in the NY state appeals court.
The device was actually installed by the Inspector General’s office. However,
the New York branch of the ACLU cites that the covert GPS tracking system violates the state’s constitution.
