Vehicle Tracking

Yesterday, the New York Daily News reported that New York’s top court has decided in favor of limited GPS tracking government employees.   But the decision to allow some use of tracking devices, related to a 2008 misconduct case against a Labor Department official, didn’t come without clarification of what the court considers to be overstepping employee privacy.  Drawing a fine line between acceptable and excessive, the court ruled that while the government can utilize vehicle tracking during hours they claim to be working, after hours and vacation time are off limits. With the court citing that employees have a “reasonable expectation” of privacy, and that government employers should exhaust other options before resorting to GPS tracking, the decision is considered significant in it’s challenge to the government’s previous stance that around-the-clock GPS tracking was acceptable.  Tell us what you think about this decision!

While almost everyone has heard of GPS tracking systems, some may be wondering how the units are actually used.  Ranging from wilderness hiking to improved customer service, here are five of the most popular ways people are using GPS tracking systems today.

Outdoor Sports

GPS tracking devices are often utilized as an added measure of security for enjoying outdoor sports.  Not only do the units allow family members to track excursions using GPS tracking software, they also provide invaluable location information in case of an emergency situation. Some GPS tracking devices feature panic buttons which activate a rapid series of location updates and automatically alert specified cell phone numbers.

Improved Customer Service

Ask anyone in the service industry, and they’ll tell you that today’s digital age consumers expect instant and reliable access to the information they want.  From real time tracking of shipments and deliveries, to knowing if public transportation is running late, GPS tracking allows management to deliver in-demand information on a silver platter.

Teenager Tracking

Oh, the parental worries that seem to arrive hand-in-hand with every child’s teenage years! Any teen driving a car, dating, and having the freedom to come and go is enough to make any reasonable parent nervous.  As a result, parents are now using tracking devices and GPS tracking software to monitor teens’ driving habits, including speed and idle time.

Asset Protection

Construction contractors, business owners and individuals use GPS tracking to protect valuable assets such as heavy equipment, tractors, lawn mowers, vehicles and central air conditioning units.  In addition to allowing for speedy recovery of stolen items, GPS tracking may also qualify users for an insurance discount depending on the provider.

Employee Tracking

One of the most painful and hidden costs of doing business is waste caused by unscrupulous employees. Administrators are now using GPS trackers and software to determine if employees are effectively managing their time, obeying the rules of the road, or abusing the use of company vehicles.  GPS tracking software quickly provides the answers employers need to operate their businesses as efficiently as possible.

From tracking teenage drivers to identifying sources of financial waste in business, the use of GPS trackers has increased exponentially over the last decade.  And, as technology continues to advance, we can only expect that GPS tracking will be used in an ever-increasing number of ways.  How could you use GPS in your business or home life?

The Telegraph, a British newspaper, reported today that the use of GPS trackers and private investigators for tracking cheating spouses is on the rise.  The article details individual cases where high tech and PI work has helped suspected spouses find out for sure if their husband or wives are having an affair.

A New Jersey judge recently ruled that the use of GPS trackers in an effort to track a spouse suspected of infidelity is legal.  The specific case involved a woman who used a GPS tracking system placed in the glove box of her husband’s car to track his whereabouts upon the recommendation of a private investigator.  After 2-weeks of covert GPS tracking, the man’s car was tracked to another woman’s driveway, where he was leaving  with another woman in his car.

The judge in the appellate court case cited that the use of  GPS trackers in a family-owned vehicle does not constitute an invasion of privacy, and that the suspected spouse did not drive to a location where he had a reasonable expectation of privacy.

An traditional form of transportation in India is getting a very modern upgrade with GPS tracking devices soon to be installed on autorickshaws, commonly used by commuters in Indian cities.   According to Indian Express, a test group of 250 autorickshaws will be equipped with GPS tracking systems by the end of July.   The GPS trackers will be monitored via GPS tracking software by transport department officials.

GPS tracking Excavator

Here’s a great GPS news story from Australia:

A man monitoring his excavator via GPS tracking software recently watched in real-time as a thief towed away the costly piece of machinery which he had equipped with a GPS tracking device .  During a trek of more than 30-miles, the GPS tracking software indicated the speed and location of the excavator as it was hauled by the tow truck.  After monitoring the entire episode via real time GPS tracking on his computer, the owner of the excavator called local authorities and told them exactly where to intercept the suspect as he continued to tow the excavator.  The suspect was taken into custody and the excavator was recovered without damage.

The above story is a great example of GPS tracking solutions at work for business owners.  Without the GPS tracking system installed on the excavator, and the sophistication of GPS tracking software, its possible the excavator might not have been recovered, resulting in considerable loss.

GPS trackers for teenage drivers

When a teenage child approaches driving age, every parent’s worries suddenly multiply.   How fast are they driving?  Where are they? Did they make it to work ok?  Parents’ worries aren’t without just cause; statistics show that the leading cause of death for teenagers is car accidents.  Fortunately, the affordability and availability of  GPS trackers now allow parents to have the answers to long-unanswered questions about their teenager’s driving habits.

A GPS tracker tossed in the glovebox of your teenager’s car, along with access to GPS tracking software, allows you to see your child’s location, direction of travel, stops, and speed in real time.  With GPS technology, you know exactly where they are and how fast they are going 24-hours a day.

In addition to peace of mind for mom and dad, GPS trackers for teenagers add an additional layer of safety for protecting your family.  For more information on GPS tracking for teenagers, visit www.trackingtheworld.com.
